Английский язык с Г. Уэллсом. "Человек-невидимка"

Текст адаптирован (без упрощения текста оригинала) по методу Ильи Франка: текст разбит на небольшие отрывки, каждый и который повторяется дважды: сначала идет английский текст с «подсказками» — с вкрапленным в него дословным русским переводом и лексико-грамматическим комментарием (то есть адаптированный), а затем — тот же текст, но уже неадаптированный, без подсказок.

Начинающие осваивать английский язык могут при этом читать сначала отрывок текста с подсказками, а затем тот же отрывок — без подсказок. Вы как бы учитесь плавать: сначала плывете с доской, потом без доски. Совершенствующие свой английский могут поступать наоборот: читать текст без подсказок, по мере необходимости подглядывая в подсказки.

Запоминание слов и выражений происходит при этом за счет их повторяемости, без зубрежки.

Кроме того, читатель привыкает к логике английского языка, начинает его «чувствовать».

Этот метод избавляет вас от стресса первого этапа освоения языка — от механического поиска каждого слова в словаре и от бесплодного гадания, что же все-таки значит фраза, все слова из которой вы уже нашли.

Пособие способствует эффективному освоению языка, может служить дополнением к учебникам по грамматике или к основным занятиям. Предназначено для студентов, для изучающих английский язык самостоятельно, а также для всех интересующихся английской культурой.

Mr. Marvel glanced about him with something very like terror.

“Very,” he said.

“Just seasonable weather for the time of year,” said the mariner, taking no denial.

“Quite,” said Mr. Marvel.

The mariner produced a toothpick, and (saving his regard) was engrossed thereby for some minutes. His eyes meanwhile were at liberty to examine Mr. Marvel’s dusty figure, and the books beside him. As he had approached Mr. Marvel he had heard a sound like the dropping of coins into a pocket. He was struck by the contrast of Mr. Marvel’s appearance with this suggestion of opulence. Thence his mind wandered back again to a topic that had taken a curiously firm hold of his imagination.

“Books (книги)?” he said suddenly, noisily finishing with the toothpick (вдруг спросил он, шумно заканчивая /ковырять/ зубочисткой).

Mr. Marvel started and looked at them (Марвел вздрогнул и посмотрел на них).

“Oh, yes (да),” he said. “Yes, they’re books (да, это книги).”

“I believe you (согласен с вами; to believe — верить; полагать),” said Mr. Marvel.

“And some extra-ordinary things out of ’em (и удивительные вещи не в книгах: «вне их» = нетольковкнигах; extra-ordinary = extraordinary),” said the mariner.

“True likewise (тоже правильно),” said Mr. Marvel. He eyed his interlocutor (он внимательно посмотрел на собеседника), and then glanced about him (а затем огляделся по сторонам).

“An Invisible Man!” said Mr. Marvel. “And what’s he been up to?”

“Everything,” said the mariner, controlling Marvel with his eye, and then amplifying, “every — blessed — thing.”

“I ain’t seen a paper these four days (я не видел газет четыре дня),” said Marvel.

“He started there. And where he came from, nobody don’t seem to know. Here it is: ‘Pe-culiar Story from Iping.’ And it says in this paper that the evidence is extra-ordinary strong — extra-ordinary.”

“Lord!” said Mr. Marvel.

“But then, it’s an extra-ordinary story (вот уж действительно удивительная: «необыкновенная» история). There is a clergyman and a medical gent witnesses (священник и доктор утверждают; gent= gentleman) — saw ’im all right and proper (что видели его совершенно ясно; ’im= him; proper— присущий, правильный; точный) — or leastways didn’t see ’im (вернее, не видели; leastways— по крайней мере). “It’s enough, ain’t it (а разве этого недостаточно)?” said the mariner.

“Don’t it? Extra-ordinary, I call it. Never heard tell of Invisible Men before, I haven’t, but nowadays one hears such a lot of extra-ordinary things — that — ”

“That all he did?” asked Marvel, trying to seem at his ease.

“It’s enough, ain’t it?” said the mariner.

“Didn’t go Back by any chance (он, случаем, не возвращался)?” asked Marvel. “Just escaped and that’s all, eh (просто убежал, и все)?”

“All (все)!” said the mariner. “Why! — ain’t it enough (а что — этого мало)?”

“Quite enough (вполне достаточно),” said Marvel.

“I should think it was enough (полагаю, что достаточно/еще бы не достаточно),” said the mariner. “I should think it was enough.”

“He didn’t have any pals (а не было ли у него товарищей) — it don’t say he had any pals, does it (в газете не пишут, что у него они были, да)?” asked Mr. Marvel, anxious (спросил Марвел беспокойно).

“Ain’t one of a sort enough for you (разве вам мало одного такого)?” asked the mariner. “No, thank Heaven, as one might say, he didn’t (нет, слава Богу: «небесам», как говорят, у него их не было).”
