Книга Мишель Ламарш Маррезе (США) посвящена парадоксу юридического положения дворянок в императорской России. С одной стороны, в тогдашнем обществе замужняя женщина не могла ни работать, ни путешествовать без разрешения мужа, а развод был для нее почти недосягаем. С другой стороны, как показывает автор, опираясь на детальный анализ множества имущественных сделок и тяжб, дворянки обладали широкими правами владения и распоряжения имуществом и прекрасно умели пользоваться ими на практике. Если в Западной Европе замужние дамы благородного звания не могли распоряжаться своим имуществом вплоть до второй половины XIX в., то в России они получили право отчуждать собственность и управлять ею уже в 1753 г. Расширение этого права в течение последующего столетия рассматривается автором в перспективе эволюции самого института частной собственности. Монография убедительно опровергает существующее андроцентричное представление о дворянском обществе дореформенной России.
