Or if you can’t wait till then, ask them to let you have the outside page of Times; turn over to page, where it is marked ‘Shipping’ on the top left hand; then take the Atlas (and that is the finest picture-book in the world) and see how the names of the places that the steamers go to fit into the names of the places on the map. Any steamer-kiddy ought to be able to do that; but if you can’t read, ask some one to show it you.

THIS is a picture of Pau Amma the Crab running away (это изображение Краба Пау Аммы, убегающего) while the Eldest Magician was talking to the Man and his Little Girl Daughter (пока Старейший Волшебник беседовал с Человеком и его Маленькой Девочкой Дочкой). The Eldest Magician is sitting on his magic throne (Старейший Волшебник сидит на своем волшебном троне), wrapped up in his Magic Cloud (закутанный в свое Волшебное Облако). The three flowers in front of him are the three Magic Flowers (три цветка перед ним — это три Волшебных Цветка). On the top of the hill you can see All-the-Elephant-there-was, and All-the-Cow-there-was, and All-the-Turtle-there-was going off to play (на вершине холма ты видишь Всего Слона, что был, и Всю Корову, что была, и Всю Черепаху, что была, отправляющимися играть) as the Eldest Magician told them (как им велел Старейший Волшебник). The Cow has a hump, because she was All-the-Cow-there-was (у Коровы горб, потому что она была Всей Коровой, что была); so she had to have all there was for all the cows that were made afterwards (поэтому ей нужно было иметь все, что было для всех коров, которые были созданы впоследствии). Under the hill there are Animals (у подножия холма Животные) who have been taught the game they were to play (которых научили игре, в которую им предстояло играть). You can see All-the-Tiger-there-was smiling at All-the-Bones-there-were (ты видишь Всего Тигра, что был, улыбающегося Всем Костям, что были), and you can see All-the-Elk-there-was, and All-the-Parrot-there-was, and All-the-Bunnies-there-were on the hill (и на холме ты видишь Всего Лося, что был, и Всего Попугая, что был, и Всех Кроликов, что были).

THIS is a picture of Pau Amma the Crab running away while the Eldest Magician was talking to the Man and his Little Girl Daughter. The Eldest Magician is sitting on his magic throne, wrapped up in his Magic Cloud. The three flowers in front of him are the three Magic Flowers. On the top of the hill you can see All-the-Elephant-there-was, and All-the-Cow-there-was, and All-the-Turtle-there-was going off to play as the Eldest Magician told them. The Cow has a hump, because she was All-the-Cow-there-was; so she had to have all there was for all the cows that were made afterwards. Under the hill there are Animals who have been taught the game they were to play. The Man is very busy talking to the Eldest Magician (Человек очень занят беседой со Старейшим Волшебником). The Little Girl Daughter is looking at Pau Amma (Маленькая Девочка Дочка смотрит на Пау Амму) as he runs away (когда он убегает). That humpy thing in the water in front is Pau Amma (эта горбатая штуковина в воде впереди — Пау Амма). He wasn’t a common Crab in those days (он не был обычным Крабом в те дни). He was a King Crab (он был Царем-Крабом). That is why he looks different (поэтому он выглядит по-другому). The thing that looks like bricks (штуковина, которая похожа на кирпичи) that the Man is standing in (в которой стоит Человек), is the Big Miz-Maze (это Большой Лабиринт). The other Animals are on the other side of the hill, so I haven’t drawn them. The little house up the hill is All-the-House-there-was. The Eldest Magician made it to show the Man how to make houses when he wanted to. The Snake round that spiky hill is All-the-Snake-there-was, and he is talking to All-the-Monkey-there-was, and the Monkey is being rude to the Snake, and the Snake is being rude to the Monkey. Pusat Tasek is underneath so I haven’t drawn it (Пусат Тасек внизу, поэтому я не нарисовал его). THIS is the picture of Pau Amma the Crab rising out of the sea as tall as the smoke of three volcanoes. I haven’t drawn the three volcanoes, because Pau Amma was so big. Pau Amma is trying to make a Magic, but he is only a silly old King Crab, and so he can’t do anything. You can see he is all legs and claws and empty hollow shell. The canoe is the canoe that the Man and the Girl Daughter and the Eldest Magician sailed from the Perak river in. The sea is all black and bubbly, because Pau Amma has just risen up out of Pusat Tasek. Pusat Tasek is underneath so I haven’t drawn it. The Man is waving his curvy kris-knife at Pau Amma.

The Little Girl Daughter is sitting quietly in the middle of the canoe (Маленькая Девочка Дочка сидит спокойно посредине каноэ). She knows she is quite safe with her Daddy (она знает, что она совершенно в безопасности с ее Папочкой). The Eldest Magician is standing up at the other end of the canoe beginning to make a Magic (Старейший Волшебник встает на другом конце каноэ, начиная творить Волшебство). He has left his magic throne on the beach (он оставил свой волшебный трон на берегу), and he has taken off his clothes so as not to get wet (и он снял свою одежду, чтобы не промокнуть), and he has left the Magic Cloud behind too (и он оставил Волшебное Облако тоже), so as not to tip the boat over (чтобы не опрокинуть лодку). The thing that looks like another little canoe outside the real canoe is called an outrigger (штуковина, которая похожа на другое маленькое каноэ за бортом настоящего каноэ, называется противовес[142]). It is a piece of wood tied to sticks (это деревяшка, привязанная к палкам), and it prevents the canoe from being tipped over (и она не дает каноэ переворачиваться; to prevent from — мешать, не допускать; оберегать от; to tip over — перевернуться, опрокинуться). The canoe is made out of one piece of wood (каноэ делается из одного куска древесины), and there is a paddle at one end of it (и на одном конце его есть весло).

THE CAT THAT WALKED BY HIMSELF

Hear and attend and listen (слушайте, и внимайте, и воспринимайте); for this befell and be-happened and became and was (ибо это случилось, и приключилось, и произошло, и было; to happen — случаться, происходить; to become — происходить), O my Best Beloved, when the Tame animals were wild (О мои Самые Любименькие, когда Домашние животные были дикими). The Dog was wild (Пес был дикий), and the Horse was wild (и Лошадь была дикая), and the Cow was wild (и Корова была дикая), and the Sheep was wild (и Овца была дикая), and the Pig was wild (и Свинья была дикая) — as wild as wild could be (такая дикая, какой только могла быть) — and they walked in the Wet Wild Woods[143] by their wild lones (и они гуляли во Влажных Диких Лесах[144] в своем диком одиночестве; lone — одинокий, уединенный; to be by one’s lonesome — быть в одиночестве). But the wildest of all the wild animals was the Cat (но самым диким из всех диких животных был Кот). He walked by himself, and all places were alike to him (он гулял сам по себе, и все места были одинаковы для него).

Of course the Man[145] was wild too (конечно, Человек тоже был диким). He was dreadfully wild (он был ужасно диким). He didn’t even begin to be tame till he met the Woman (он даже не начинал приручаться, пока не встретил Женщину; tame — прирученный, одомашненный; укрощенный /о животных/; послушный, податливый, уступчивый /о животном, человеке/), and she told him (и она сказала ему) that she did not like living in his wild ways (что ей не нравится жить в его дикой манере = в его дикости). She picked out a nice dry Cave (она выбрала симпатичную сухую Пещеру), instead of a heap of wet leaves, to lie down in (вместо груды влажных листьев для лежания); and she strewed clean sand on the floor (и она насыпала чистого песка на пол); and she lit a nice fire of wood at the back of the Cave (и она разожгла приятный костерок из дров в задней части Пещеры; to light — зажигать); and she hung a dried wild-horse skin, tail-down (и она повесила высушенную шкуру дикой лошади хвостом вниз; to hang — вешать, развешивать, подвешивать), across the opening of the Cave (на входе Пещеры); and she said (и она сказала), ‘Wipe your feet, dear (вытирай /свои/ ноги, дорогой), when you come in (когда ты входишь), and now we’ll keep house (и теперь мы будем вести хозяйство; to keep house — вести хозяйство: «держать дом»).’
