‘You are lazy,’ said the Eldest Magician (ты ленив, — сказал Старейший Волшебник). ‘So your children shall be lazy (и дети твои будут ленивы). They shall be the laziest people in the world (они будут самыми ленивыми людьми в мире). They shall be called the Malazy — the lazy people (их назовут Малазийцы — ленивый народ[134]);’ and he held up his finger to the Moon and said (и он поднял свой палец к Луне и сказал), ‘O Fisherman, here is the Man too lazy to row home (О Рыбак, вот Человек слишком ленивый, чтобы догрести домой). Pull his canoe home with your line, Fisherman (оттащи его каноэ домой своей леской, Рыбак).’

‘No,’ said the Man (нет, — сказал Человек). ‘If I am to be lazy all my days (если мне суждено быть ленивым все мои дни), let the Sea work for me twice a day for ever (пусть Море работает на меня всегда два раза в день). And the Rat of the Moon stopped biting the line (и Лунная Крыса прекратила грызть леску); and the Fisherman let his line down till it touched the Sea (а Рыбак опустил леску вниз, пока она не коснулась Моря), and he pulled the whole deep Sea along (и он потянул все глубокое Море), past the Island of Bintang, past Singapore, past Malacca, past Selangor (мимо Острова Бинтанга, мимо Сингапура, мимо Малакки, мимо Селангора), till the canoe whirled into the mouth of the Perak river again (пока каноэ снова не пронеслось в устье реки Перак).

‘Kun?’ said the Fisherman of the Moon (кун? — спросил Лунный Рыбак).

And the Eldest Magician laughed and said, ‘Payah kun’ (That is right).

And the Rat of the Moon stopped biting the line; and the Fisherman let his line down till it touched the Sea, and he pulled the whole deep Sea along, past the Island of Bintang, past Singapore, past Malacca, past Selangor, till the canoe whirled into the mouth of the Perak river again.

‘Kun?’ said the Fisherman of the Moon.

From that day to this (с того дня и поныне) the Moon has always pulled the sea up and down and made (Луна всегда поднимает и опускает море и создает; to pull up — тянуть вверх; to pull down — тянуть вниз) what we call the tides (то, что мы называем приливами; tide — прилив и отлив). Sometimes the Fisher of the Sea pulls a little too hard (иногда Лунный Рыбак тянет немного слишком резко = немного резче, чем следует), and then we get spring-tides (и тогда мы получаем = бывают сизигийные приливы[135]); and sometimes he pulls a little too softly (а иногда он тянет немного слишком слабо = немного слабее, чем следует), and then we get what are called neap-tides (и тогда бывает то, что мы называем квадратурными приливами[136]); but nearly always he is careful, because of the Eldest Magician (но почти всегда он осторожен из-за Старейшего Волшебника).

From that day to this the Moon has always pulled the sea up and down and made what we call the tides. Sometimes the Fisher of the Sea pulls a little too hard, and then we get spring-tides; and sometimes he pulls a little too softly, and then we get what are called neap-tides; but nearly always he is careful, because of the Eldest Magician.

And Pau Amma (а Пау Амма)? Oh yes (ах, да)! Any steamer-kiddy ought to be able to do that (любой пароходный малыш = любой малыш на пароходе должен уметь /делать/ это); but if you can’t read (но если вы не умеете читать), ask some one to show it you (попросите кого-нибудь показать вам это).
