Книга американского историка Эрика Лора посвящена важнейшему сюжету истории Первой мировой войны в России — притеснительной и карательной политике властей в отношении подданных враждебных государств и, в еще большей степени, тех российских подданных, которые были сочтены неблагонадежными в силу своей национальности или этнического происхождения. Начавшись с временных мер, призванных обеспечить безопасность тыла, эта политика переросла в широкомасштабную кампанию «национализации» империи. Отказ от натурализации иностранцев, конфискация земель и предприятий у целых категорий этнически нерусского населения в пользу «русского элемента», массовые депортации евреев и немецких колонистов, вольное или невольное поощрение стихийного насилия против «инородцев» — все это бумерангом ударило по традиционным основаниям имперского строя. Попытка старого режима мобилизовать русский национализм немедленно отозвалась ростом националистических и сепаратистских настроений в среде меньшинств и тем самым приблизила революционные потрясения. Вышедшая на английском языке в 2003 году, монография Э. Лора остается одной из самых цитируемых работ по предреволюционной эпохе.
