Гасанлы показывает сложные перипетии использования национально-освободительного движения в Иранском Азербайджане как инструмента внешней политики СССР, отстаивание Западом интересов Ирана в противовес Москве. И тут напрашиваются прямые параллели с сегодняшним кризисом в отношениях между Ираном и США, отстаиванием Россией интересов Ирана в противовес США.

Изложение событий носит хроникально-документальный характер и порою воспринимается как политический детектив.
