At this, O Best Beloved (при этом, О Самые Любименькие), the Elephant’s Child was much annoyed (Слоненок был очень раздосадован), and he said (и он сказал), speaking through his nose (говоря в нос), like this (вот так), ‘Led go (одбуздиде; Led go = let go — «дайте/позвольте уйти»)! Then the Elephant’s Child put his head down close to the Crocodile’s musky, tusky mouth, and the Crocodile caught him by his little nose, which up to that very week, day, hour, and minute, had been no bigger than a boot, though much more useful.

‘I think,’ said the Crocodile — and he said it between his teeth, like this — ‘I think to-day I will begin with Elephant’s Child!’

At this, O Best Beloved, the Elephant’s Child was much annoyed, and he said, speaking through his nose, like this, ‘Led go! You are hurtig be!’

Then the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake scuffled down from the bank and said (тогда Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей спустился с шуршанием с берега и сказал; to scuffle — ходить шаркая ногами, волоча ноги), ‘My young friend (мой юный друг), if you do not now, immediately and instantly, pull as hard as ever you can (если ты сейчас, немедленно и тотчас, не дернешь изо всех сил), it is my opinion (у меня складывается такое мнение) that your acquaintance in the large-pattern leather ulster’ (что твой знакомый в пальто из тисненой кожи; ulster — длинное свободное пальто /обыкн. с поясом/) (and by this he meant the Crocodile (под этим он имел в виду Крокодила)) ‘will jerk you into yonder limpid stream (затащит тебя в вон тот прозрачный поток; to jerk — резко толкать, дергать) before you can say Jack Robinson (не успеешь ты и ахнуть; before you can say Jack Robinson — в момент, в одну секунду; не успеете и слова вымолвить).’

Then the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake came down from the bank (тогда Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей спустился с берега), and knotted himself in a double-clove-hitch round the Elephant’s Child’s hind legs (и завязался двойным морским узлом вокруг задних ног Слоненка), and said (и сказал), ‘Rash and inexperienced traveller (безрассудный и неопытный путешественник), we will now seriously devote ourselves to a little high tension (сейчас мы серьезно посвятим себя небольшому высокому = сильному напряжению-растяжению; tension — напряжение; натягивание, натяжение; растяжение, растягивание, удлинение), because if we do not (потому что если мы не сделаем этого), it is my impression that yonder self-propelling man-of-war with the armour-plated upper deck (у меня такое впечатление, что вон тот самодвижущийся военный корабль с бронированной верхней палубой)’ (and by this, O Best Beloved, he meant the Crocodile (а под этим, О Наилюбименькие, он подразумевал Крокодила)), ‘will permanently vitiate your future career (надолго испортит твою будущую карьеру).’

So he pulled (и он потянул), and the Elephant’s Child pulled (и Слоненок потянул), and the Crocodile pulled (и Крокодил потянул); but the Elephant’s Child and the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake pulled hardest (но Слоненок и Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей тянули сильнее); and at last the Crocodile let go of the Elephant’s Child’s nose with a plop (и наконец Крокодил отпустил нос Слоненка с /таким/ плюхом) that you could hear all up and down the Limpopo (который вы могли услышать = можно было услышать по всей Лимпопо вверх и вниз по течению).

So he pulled, and the Elephant’s Child pulled, and the Crocodile pulled; but the Elephant’s Child and the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake pulled hardest; and at last the Crocodile let go of the Elephant’s Child’s nose with a plop that you could hear all up and down the Limpopo.

Then the Elephant’s Child sat down most hard and sudden (тогда Слоненок сел очень решительный и стремительный); but first he was careful to say ‘Thank you’ to the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (но сначала он был внимателен = проявил внимательность и поблагодарил Двухцветного-Питона-Скалистого-Змея); and next he was kind to his poor pulled nose (а потом он был любезен = проявил любезность к своему бедному вытянутому носу), and wrapped it all up in cool banana leaves (и завернул его полностью в прохладные банановые листья), and hung it in the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo to cool (и свесил его в великую серо-зеленую жирную Лимпопо, чтобы охладить /его/).

Then the Elephant’s Child sat down most hard and sudden; but first he was careful to say ‘Thank you’ to the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake; and next he was kind to his poor pulled nose, and wrapped it all up in cool banana leaves, and hung it in the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo to cool.

‘What are you doing that for?’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake.

‘‘Scuse me,’ said the Elephant’s Child, ‘but my nose is badly out of shape, and I am waiting for it to shrink.’

‘Then you will have to wait a long time (тогда тебе придется ждать долго),’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (сказал Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей). ‘Some people do not know what is good for them (некоторые /люди/ не знают, что для них хорошо).’

The Elephant’s Child sat there for three days (Слоненок просидел там три дня) waiting for his nose to shrink (ожидая, что его нос усохнет). For, O Best Beloved, you will see and understand (ибо, О Самые Любименькие, вы увидите и поймете) that the Crocodile had pulled it out into a really truly trunk (что Крокодил вытянул его = нос в самый настоящий хобот) same as all Elephants have to-day (точно такой же, какой есть у всех Слонов сегодня).

‘Then you will have to wait a long time,’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake. ‘Some people do not know what is good for them.’

The Elephant’s Child sat there for three days waiting for his nose to shrink. But it never grew any shorter, and, besides, it made him squint. For, O Best Beloved, you will see and understand that the Crocodile had pulled it out into a really truly trunk same as all Elephants have to-day.

At the end of the third day a fly came and stung him on the shoulder (в конце третьего дня прилетела муха и ужалила его в плечо; to sting — жалить), and before he knew what he was doing (и прежде чем он понял, что он делает) he lifted up his trunk and hit that fly dead with the end of it (он поднял свой хобот и ударил эту муху насмерть = убил эту муху его кончиком; to hit — ударить).
