О превосходстве американской стыковочной техники и методики над советской свидетельствует генерал Каманин. Вот какую запись он оставил в своем дневнике 1 февраля 1971 г.: «По-видимому, экипаж «Аполлона-14» твердо уверен, что в случае отказа автоматики он сможет успешно осуществить стыковку вручную. На наших «Союзах» такая стыковка до сих пор надежно не освоена». А в мае того же года он вновь коснулся этой темы, оставив следующую запись в дневнике: «С большим опозданием и скрипом мы приходим к тому, с чего надо было начинать, приступая к решению проблемы стыковки в космосе, и что специалисты ВВС предлагали еще в 1962 г.».
